On Monday, Rachael Hamilton MSP held a meeting with local businesses and environmental organisation Nature Scot over the growing problem with aggressive seagulls.
The gathering in Eyemouth was attended by the Scottish Government agency Nature Scot, representatives from Scottish Borders Council and local enterprises including Eyemouth Harbour Trust, Giacopazzis and The Ship’s Quarters.
The meeting included a discussion on preventative measures, such as improved signage and gull-proof bins and an agreement for a strategic approach to the issue through the support of a pilot licensing scheme. Those at the meeting also took part in a tour of the worst affected areas in the town.
Scottish Borders MSP, Rachael Hamilton, said: "Aggressive seagulls are becoming more of a problem as the years go on and this situation simply cannot continue.
"Local people, especially children, are being attacked on a regular basis. It has become a serious safety issue.
"I was pleased to hold this discussion to try and find meaningful solutions with local businesses and relevant organisations, such as a pilot scheme that would simplify the licensing process.
"It was a productive meeting and I am looking forward to seeing what progress can be made by NatureScot and the local council in the near future."
