John Lamont MP has welcomed the introduction of a new free-to-use cash machine at Nairn’s Newsagent and Post Office in Duns.
The Scottish Borders MP recently visited the store and praised the business owner, Naeem Younus, for helping local people access cash services.
John Lamont MP has been pushing for better access to cash for local people.
He launched a campaign to save local banks following the news that Bank of Scotland planned to close several branches across the Borders, including one in Duns, which he called a “betrayal” of loyal customers.
The local MP has also joined a national UK-wide campaign to ‘Save Our Banks’, which was launched by Derbyshire Dales representative, Sarah Dines MP.
In a letter to launch the campaign, Ms Dines said some communities had “effectively been debanked” and closures have “far-reaching consequences, impacting vulnerable individuals, farmers, small businesses and the elderly to name a few who rely on these services.’”
Scottish Borders MP, John Lamont, said: “I am pleased we have been able to secure a new free-to-use cash point in Duns and I want to thank the team at the local Post Office for introducing it.
“We need more cash machines like this to be established and I am continuing to call for big banks to provide more locations for loyal customers.
“Borders residents, particularly older and vulnerable people, need quick and easy access to cash. I will continue to campaign for more local banking services in our communities.”
Naeem Younus said: “I am pleased to be able to provide this resource for my customers. I hope it will be helpful.
“Thank you to John Lamont for his support.”
